Haben Linux und Windows nicht Prozesse, die unbenutzte Speicherseiten ausnullen, so dass Programme, die Speicher vom Betriebssystem anfordern, nur Speicherseiten, die mit Nullen gefüllt sind?
Hat nicht Linux üblicherweise eine Swap-Partition an fester Stelle? Das Swapfile von Windows sollte sich, zumindest wenn eine feste Größe (was meines Wissens best practice ist) eingestellt ist, ebenfalls eher wenig bewegen.

The Stanford NLP Group released a Named Entity Recognition software, based on Conditional Random Fields and implemented in Java.

It is pretty fast and also acheives quite good performance with the included models.

For integration into IBM's UIMA text analysis frameword, I have written an Analysis Engine component that wraps the Stanford NE Regonizer.

Just like the Recognizer itself it is licensed under the GPL.

Die Firma ClearForest baut Text-Mining-Software. Eine wichtige Komponente ist dabei ein Named Entity Recognizer: Eine Komponente, die in den Texten die Namen von Personen, Firmen und Orten erkennt. (mit sowas beschäftige ich mich auch in meiner Diplomarbeit).

ClearForest stellt ihre Named-Enitity-Recognition-Komponente (anscheinend sogar mit ein bisschen Koreferenz-Auflösung) jetzt auch als Web Service öffentlich (für nichtkommerzielle Nutzung) zur Verfügung, und hat einen Wettbewerb ausgerufen, damit Mashups zu bauen.

A while ago I started managing my bookmarks (those that are suitable for the public, mind you) with del.icio.us. I really like it, and I'd like to also put it to use for the bibliography for my masters thesis, but del.icio.us has a big drawback for that: It doesn't seem to support any electronic bibliography formats like e.g. BibTeX.
Furthermore, scientific publications have some more metadata (like the author) one would like to have searchable, and not in the regular tags please (if you think it should be in the tags, please tell me why.)

There are indeed alternatives focusing on scientific publications, and - as with all great ideas and their good follow-ons - even more than one. Even though choise is great in principle, I'm not too happy about this as for social software, you want to have network effects and the spread of users over several sites hurts for that matter.
And I have to decide: Do I stay with del.icio.us and it's large user base, even though it has no support for citation software? (maybe abuse the the description field for BibTex data). Or switch to a more scientifically oriented service? And which to chosse? I know of Connotea, BibSonomy and CiteULike. Any recommendations?

At least the PHP project seems to answer "NO", and I have to admit I'm not too happy about that.

In my opinion, the question whether an OSS project should care about the late majority is a piece of whether the project will be seen as "ready for the enterprise", as large enterprises tend to the late adopter side.
However, the issue is not only about late adoption, it is also very much about systems that stay in service for quite a long time and where large changes to the infrastructure are avoided whereever possible. This is also a characteristic of "enterprise" deployments.

Thus, not offering long-term support as an OSS project could influence enterprises to opt for other software infrastructure. Furthermore, I believe the argument that independent consultancies could provide long-term support even when the main project has abandoned the software version in question is somewhat moot, as many will have the feeling that independent consultants will not be able to offer the same quality as the original project.

Heute spielt Scott McNealy auch mal den Nikolaus, und beschert den Sonnenanbetern neue Hardware, wie die Gerüchteküche weiß mit den neuen UltraSPARC-T1-Prozessoren. Diese Prozessoren integrieren 8 CPU-Cores auf einem Chip, die jeweils 4 Threads parallel ausführen können. Mit insgesamt also 32 Threads bei nur 72 Watt Leistungsaufnahme will Sun insbesndere den heißen und stromhungrigen x86-basieren Bladecentern Paroli bieten. Die Gerüchteküche will wissen, dass die Systeme den größeren Galaxy-Servern sehr ähnlich sind, und mit bis zu 8GB RAM und SAS-Platten kommen sollen, man munkelt ausserdem von Preisen um die 10.000 Euro.
Ich habe mir mal den Spaß gemacht, und ein Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis gegenüber Dell-Bladeservern ausgerechnet:

Wer einmal auf einer Sun V20z das Hardware-RAID ausprobiert hat, war vielleicht wie wir entsetzt über die katastrophale Geschwindigkeit des RAID-Syncs, nachdem man den Mirror eingerichtet hat. Von Lao Tsao kommt nun ein Tip: erst das Betriebssystem installieren, dann das RAID aktivieren, dann geht es viel schneller.
Warum das so ist, ist mir jedoch einigermaßen unklar.

Solaris Zones heißt der Virtualisierungsansatz von Sun in Solaris 10.
Die Zones sind meinem Kenntnisstand nach im wesentlichen auf die Spitze getriebene Jails a la FreeBSD: Die Instanzen teilen sich einen Kernel, können aber ansonsten ein komplett eigenes Userland enthalten. Alternativ können sich mehrere Zonen auch ein Userland (read-only) teilen. Mit den Ressource-Management-Fähigkeiten von Solaris kann ausserdem genau festgelegt werden, wie viel Ressourcen (CPU, Speicher usw.) eine Instanz beanspruchen darf.
Einen Vergleich der Fähigkeiten der Zones gegenüber Jails, chroot, UserMode Linux, Xen und VMware findet sich beim Unix Admin Corner.

Mit Sun Cluster kann man nun die virtuellen Instanzen auch hochverfügbar machen. docs.sun.com erklärt wie.
Eine Migration im laufenden Betrieb wie wohl bei Xen und VMware ESX möglich, geht bei den HA-Zonen aber nicht, hier muss die Zone auf dem einen Node beendet, und auf dem anderen neu gestartet werden. Der Boot einer Zone geht aber ziemlich fix (u.a. dank SMF, das in Solaris 10 das klassische SysV-init ersetzt) . Bei einem tatsächlichen Ausfall des aktiven Nodes muss die Instanz ja auch bei Xen und VMware auf dem übernehmenden Node kalt starten.
