When Eclipse can't find its JUnit 4 libraries

Today I lost a bit of time trying to make Eclipse 3.5 run JUnit 4 test cases. It complained about "no tests found". I discovered that JUnit 4 was not on the build path, and I couldn't add it because while Eclipse had an entry in its Build Path -> Libraries -> Add Libraray -> JUnit -> JUnit 4, it just said "Not Found" and that was it. Adding it as an external JAR helped with the compiling but didn't enable the test runners either.

It turned out that this was actually a packaging bug in the Eclipse packages in Fedora 12 and that you have to also install the eclipse-pde package.

badblocklocate: Find LVM2 logical volume containing a block

When SMART tells you about possibly defective hard disk blocks, you might want to know what volumes are affected so you can perform extra precautions or rewrite the data to the the disk to reallocate the affected blocks.

The excellent Bad block HOWTO for smartmontools tells you how to do this, but is too easy to get confused by all the different block numbers, sizes and offsets you have to calculate.

Therefore, I have written a small script that performs the calculations and determines the LVM2 volume that contains a given block number: badblocklocate.py.

Can determine LVM2 logical volume names from block numbers given on the command line, or can call smartctl to automatically determine defective blocks. Please see the comments at the top of the file for usage information.

For now, it works for LVM2 logical volumes only (though classical partitions can be determined through the error message.) If time permits, i might extend it that it also determines which file contains the defective blocks.

Gibt es eigentlich irgend ein Package-Management-System, mit dem man als gewöhnlicher User Software unterhalb eines selbstgewählten Verzeichnisses (quasi ein Schatten-/usr/local für den User) installieren kann, ohne root zu sein?

(Der Job als Systemadministrator hatte doch gewisse Vorteile.)

Yahoo + Microsoft

Alle schreiben vom Übernahmeangebot an Yahoo durch Microsoft, ich auch.
Aber nicht viel, eigentlich werfe ich nur mit einem Link. Dass Microsofts und Yahoos Suchmaschinen-Knowhow zusammengenommen richtig spannend werden können ist wohl ein no-brainer. Curt Monash hat noch ein paar interessante Punkte im Bezug auf Enterprise Search zu bieten, und vor allem folgendes:

Zugschlus sorgt gerade in seinem Blog für Popcorn-Traffic mit einer Artikelreihe zum Vergleich graphische gegen textbasierte (TUI) Benutzerinterfaces.

Bisweilen schießt er dabei am eigentlich Ziel vorbei, so zeigen etliche seiner Beispiele eigentlich weniger die Vorteile von textbasierten User Interfaces, sondern sind vielmehr ein Lobgesang auf die Textdatei als Konfigurationsspeicher.

Hier habe ich ein Argument für ihn, das tatsächlich einen Vorteil des textbasierten User Interfaces darstellt. Genau genommen: Einen Vorteil des Kommandozeilen-Interfaces (hat er bestimmt noch in seiner Pipeline, aber... erster!):

Über die Streitfrage /'ru:t@/ oder /raUt@/ hatte ich vor einiger Zeit mal was geschrieben. Mehr Regionalismen im IT-Jargon hat Dave Kellogg.

Dave vergleicht USA und UK, Meine Anmerkungen aus Deutschland:

S-Q-L ist viel verbreiteter als "Sequel". Insbesndere habe ich in Deutschland noch nie jemanden "My-Sequel" zum Datenbanksystem MySQL sagen hören, immer nur "My-S-Q-L".

BEA (die Middleware-Firma) würde ich immer "Bea" aussprechen.

SAP ist gemischt. Manchse sagen "S-A-P", manche "Sap".

Sprecht Ihr manche Sachen anders?

Der Client hält eine HTTP-Verbindung zum Server offen, über die er Updates für die Web"seite" bekommt, sobald sie vorliegen. Push, nicht Pull!
